Kia, the same company that makes the 120-hp Rio subcompact and the Soul crossover that was previously advertised by hamsters, also makes a wildly superb sports sedan that doesn’t get the respect—or sales—it deserves. The Stinger is a four-door hatchback with rear-wheel drive as standard and optional all-wheel drive. The Stinger is similar to a BMW 4-series Gran Coupe, although it starts at the price of a sport compact. The standard engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 horsepower.

The optional 368-hp twin-turbo V-6 is the preferred stinger, and this combination was the first Kia to reach 60 mph in less than 5.0 seconds. This is a well-handling vehicle with a surprisingly comfortable ride, as well as a smart design and a luxury interior. Exterior

The Stinger is offered with two turbocharged engines: a 300-hp 2.5-liter turbo-four and a 368-hp twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6. The V-6 produces a thrilling performance that gets our adrenaline flowing. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that, in our experience, produces rapid shifts at the redline while remaining quiet when left to shift on its own.

However, we wish the paddle shifters responded more quickly to driver inputs. Nonetheless, for drivers who are solely interested in straight-line speed, the V-6-powered Stinger GT does not disappoint. The Stinger GT2 has mastered straight-line speed, reaching 60 mph in 4.6 seconds during our track tests.

It drives admirably in normal conditions, but when pushed to the limit, it lacks the poise of its more established competitors. Similarly, we detected some rear suspension protests—an disconcerting side step when cornering hard on a rough road—as well as some fore-and-aft tilting accompanying our all-out acceleration and braking runs.

The GT2 comes standard with strong Brembo brakes that allow fast stops by any standard and blend in nicely with this class of high-performance sedans. The Stinger is less impressive without the Brembos and rides on less grippy all-season tires.

Interior

The interior of the Stinger is well-designed and appealing, but it falls short of the material quality and workmanship of the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series. The Stinger, on the other hand, has a substantially more comfortable rear seat than many cars in this price range—and its space advantage seems larger than its figures show. While the interior of the Stinger is clear of obvious faults and omissions, the overall effect is less polished than we’ve seen from famous premium manufacturers.

The Stinger’s advertised boot volume suggests that it has by far the greatest cargo space in its group, yet it only outperformed its competitors by a narrow margin in our real-world cargo tests. With its large hatchback opening and lengthy wheelbase, we expected the Stinger to perform even better in our tests. It has a spacious center console for a car, which helps to compensate for the fact that the front-door pockets are the smallest of the bunch.
