Since its release in 2020, the second-generation Mahindra Thar has been a fan favourite. Yes, the off-roading crowd had their hearts stolen, but a large portion of consumers purchased it for its newfound roundedness. Because of its modern interior and features, (relatively) smooth driving characteristics, and automatic transmission options, it could finally be used as an everyday car. Mahindra Thar 2023 Price in Pakistan starts from PKR 3.7 Million.
However, Mahindra has since introduced new Thar models that do not have the 4×4 system and are solely rear-wheel drive (RWD). There is also a new small-capacity diesel engine with tax advantages and thus a lower price. It is now more affordable, but how does a non-4WD Thar feel?
In addition to introducing new versions of its popular SUV, the Thar, Mahindra & Mahindra has also revealed a new powertrain option. With the addition of a new 1.5L diesel engine, the model range is now eligible for the GST that is applied to cars shorter than four meters.
The Marazzo MPV also makes use of the same oil burner. The motor can generate up to 117 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque when coupled with a manual 6-speed gearbox. Even more intriguing is the fact that the 2.0L mStallion turbo petrol engine and the new 1.5L diesel engine of the Mahindra Thar 2023 will both come with an RWD system.
For the turbo-petrol RWD variant, a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission is the only available gearbox. The carmaker now offers Everest White and Blazing Bronze as two other colour choices. The prices of the new Mahindra Thar for 2023 are Rs 10.98 lakh for the 1.5L diesel and Rs 16.93 lakh for the 2.0 turbo petrol 42 variants. All of the above-listed prices are ex-showroom.

Exterior
Before we get to the huge alterations, let’s look at the modest, or in this case, really minor, external changes. Everything is the same except for the removal of the ‘4×4’ insignia. The distinguishing shape hasn’t changed, and other elements like the slatted grille, round headlamps, exposed bonnet clips, and hefty cladding haven’t been changed.
The base AX model has conventional 16-inch steel rims, while the higher-spec LX model has 18-inch alloys and all-terrain tyres. The Thar RWD’s body design options are confined to a hard top, however, the RWD does expand the colour palette by introducing two more possibilities – Blazing Bronze and Everest White.
Interior
The most noticeable difference on the inside is the absence of the 4WD lever, which has been replaced by a cubby hole that may be used to store a cell phone. Aside from that, there are no changes to the dashboard, seats, or feature set.
Given that this is an upgrade aimed at urban consumers, Mahindra should have used the opportunity to include some convenience features. We’d want to see a driver armrest, automatic climate control, wireless charging, type-C connections for speedier charging, and a dead pedal for automatic versions.
A 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support (and even an inclinometer – brought over from the 4WD), analogue dials, and Mahindra’s BlueSense connectivity capabilities round out the feature list.
Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill-launch assist, hill-descent control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a roll cage are among the safety features. GNCAP awarded the Mahindra Thar a 4-star certification for adult occupant protection, using an earlier testing technique.

Pros & Cons
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
The best affordable off-road vehicle in the country with genuine off-road ability | Not a family jeep; it isn’t as cozy for four people as other SUVs that are priced similarly. has a limited rear, fits and finishes poorly, and lacks boot capacity. |
Because of its restricted user base, harsh lineage, and Thar-Attitude | Road dynamics Legroom uses less gasoline than competitors and isn’t as smooth to drive. The Fantastic Leap evolved to such an extent that the old paradigm no longer feels relevant. |
Strong engines with good gasoline refinement, controlled diesel, and overall driveability | |
Reasonably comfortable — The cabin is far more spacious and well-equipped than it was in the past. |
Mahindra Thar 2023 Review:
The Thar is thrilling to drive, whether you’re in the front or the back. It functions just as well and runs smoothly and silently off-road. This engine has helped Mahindra achieve great things, which makes it more desirable. Comparing the Thar to competitors in its price bracket doesn’t seem fair considering that owning one is all about making a statement.
However, Thar’s quality and thrift, along with a few ergonomic annoyances and occupant discomfort in persistently impoverished places, are its limitations. However, compared to other cars I’ve driven, the new Thar has garnered equal attention.
Best budget friendly jeep.
