Despite the model’s increase in size over time, the designers did an outstanding job of maintaining the MINI’s recognizable appearance. My tester was clearly identifiable as anything other than a MINI even from across a football field.
The top had a multi-tone design that fades from dark blue to light blue to black, while the lower body was painted in Rooftop Grey Metallic, subtle colour with a khaki-like undertone. Personally? Although the treatment looked fantastic, I would have chosen a Union Jack or checkerboard.
Overall, no MINI can be argued as being anything but adorable. However, the exterior trim, mirrors, door handles, gas cap, and badging on my test vehicle were all finished in piano black, giving it a slight edge. I liked it since it had the same effect as seeing a French Bull with a spiked collar.
The hood vent, intakes in the lower corner of the grille surround, and the sizable intercooler under the radiator, all of which hint at the potent little mill under the hood, can be seen if you look at the sheet metal more closely. The wheels are placed exactly at the borders of each corner, much like the original, giving the MINI a go-kart-like appearance.
Before all MINIs had a large, centrally positioned speedometer, but that has since been discontinued. Behind the steering wheel, a small, independent screen now houses the speedometer and tachometer, creating a sleek, contemporary look. The 8.8-inch infotainment screen and a huge volume knob are now housed in the middle of the dash’s large circular element, which is still present.
In use, the circular trim piece makes the screen appear a little bit smaller, but the display is still more than adequate, and the dynamic lighting around the housing’s borders is a nice touch. It will go from yellow to red when you’re backing up into an object in the rear, for instance, then turn red to signify the volume level. Quite the trick.
The MINI’s interior offers plenty of appealing features. Excellent build quality and suppleness are present throughout. Additionally, the design of everything feels coherent. I considered the seats to be well-bolstered and pleasant despite the adjustability being a little odd. More significantly, there was enough room for my 6’2″ frame. In total, I think my favourite interior feature was the centre console’s toggle switches.
