There are a few niggles left. The driving posture is elevated, which is good, but the steering column only adjusts for tilt and not reach, so I never felt entirely at ease. Furthermore, the wheel is skewed to the left, causing you to drive crookedly. I suppose it’s one of those things you get used to.
The 1.3-litre three-cylinder turbo from MG seems small – and it is – but it packs a punch, producing 115kW at a high-ish 5200-6200rpm and 230Nm between 1800 and 4400rpm. The fact that a six-speed Aisin torque converter automatic moves the ratios and drives the front wheels rather than the entry-level engine’s CVT sweetens the deal even more.

The Essence comes with the sportiest 17-inch wheels, a six-speaker stereo, power front seats with heating, PVC seat trim, auto LED headlights, auto wipers, a massive double sunroof, air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, front, side, and reversing cameras, power windows and mirrors, and a space-saver spare.
The 10.1-inch touchscreen display is adorned with MG’s own software, which is a far superior attempt to the old ZS. It features navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, however it is really slow to work, which is a disappointment. I frequently found myself pressing buttons twice to get things to work, only to end up somewhere I didn’t want to be.
