When Lamborghini originally debuted the Aventador a decade ago, the editor who worked with me at the time loved to throw around a phrase credited to Ernest Hemingway that was incorrectly attributed to him. The Aventador, like many others, is named after a legendary fighting bull, and it, too, is doomed to die. Lamborghini has also addressed a minor fault in the SVJ Roadster’s rear-steering system in the Ultimae. When driven strongly, the Roadster’s rear steering was overly eager, responding to steering inputs too quickly and needing mid-corner corrections. The SVJ Roadster corrected the SVJ Coupe’s braking flaw, and the Ultimate has corrected the Roadster’s steering flaw. The rear end works in perfect harmony with the front end once more, making the rear steering unnoticeable to the driver.
The transmission is the one Aventador flaw that hasn’t been fixed since day one and will never be. The operational realities of a single-clutch automatic manual transmission are unavoidable. Lamborghini has tried harder and longer than anybody else, but the acceleration decrease during gear shifts, particularly at low speeds, cannot be hidden. Although late-model Aventadors shift better than earlier models, it remains an irritating anachronism in a world of seamless dual-clutch automatics (even the less priced Huracán). The secret is to drive it like a manual transmission, easing off the gas nearly completely immediately before pressing the upshift paddle, a tough dance to perfect but one that virtually eliminates the normal whiplash gearchange.
