Exterior

It’s simple to think of an electric vehicle (EV) with a massive battery as overkill when your daily commute to work and back is just a little over 20 miles, and “the new normal” involves going in only occasionally. For our tiny Fiat 500, one with only 42kWh has so far shown to be more than adequate, frequently allowing me to travel several weeks between charges when used only for commuting.

This is true despite the fact that its estimated range is still limited to 160 miles on a full charge, which is significantly 20 percent less than the 199 miles that WLTP testing predicted. That probably shouldn’t have come as a big surprise because the temperature has been slowly falling since the 500 arrived.

Not that I’m treating the battery delicately either. The cabin is usually warm and the heated seats are always on since I won’t turn down the climate control merely to add a few miles. The cherry on top would have been a heated steering wheel, but regrettably, that feature is not even available on the most expensive La Prima model.

Additionally, I prefer to keep the driving mode at Normal, which allows for a much more responsive throttle and minimal regenerative braking. The relaxation of one-pedal driving in Range mode is undeniable, but I just can’t get accustomed to how the brakes become very grabby at low speeds.

Interior

What does a 620-horsepower V6 supercar with carbon fiber trim have in common with an electric supermini? The new Maserati MC20 shares its infotainment system with the 500, according to our recent UK drive. That can only be a good thing, based on my experience using it in the Fiat: the UI is simple to use, reacts swiftly to inputs, and doesn’t use an excessive amount of icons.

Fortunately, that’s the most obnoxious thing about my morning drive; my neighbors would probably prefer a city car with a quiet engine to the roaring V8 of the McLaren GT I recently borrowed. Although it’s simple to change the settings back with a few clicks, the point is that I shouldn’t have to because I’ve yet to figure out why the system discards my preferences.

More annoying was the unsuccessful charge at the Autocar office in Twickenham, which I didn’t discover until I was on my way home for the weekend. I had less than 40 miles of range due to user error rather than mechanical failure (the individual who rented the car failed to verify that the wall box he connected into was truly functional).
