Exterior
The 248-hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine under the hood of the rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i and all-wheel-drive xDrive30i provides enough power to comfortably navigate almost any traffic situation, but it’s hardly thrilling. The xDrive 30i took 6.2 seconds to reach 60 mph on our test track; we haven’t tested a sDrive30i model. In our testing, the Porsche Macan S and the Audi Q5 were both significantly faster—the Porsche significantly faster.
Those looking for a performance-oriented crossover will prefer the X3 M40i. Its 382-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine delivers almost brutish power, with a 4.1-second zero-to-60-mph time in our testing.

Interior
Before you even check a single option box, the X3’s stylish interior is well-equipped; 10-way power-adjustable front seats with adjustable side bolsters make it easy to find a comfortable position. Rear-seat passengers enjoy reclining seatbacks, and the cushioning on all seats is comfortable enough for long journeys.
The rest of the X3’s cabin is attractive and competently put together, with well-chosen materials and tight panel gaps. The glossy woodgrain trim on our test vehicle looked and felt real despite being plastic; the stitched faux-leather dash and door coverings, as well as the nickel-finish metal trim, add an extra element of luxury. In our carry-on suitcase test, the X3 performed about average for the segment.
