Exterior

The conventional four-cylinder engine is paired with a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission, but acceleration figures are disappointing. The Camry hybrid is powered by a less powerful version of the engine, a battery, and two electric motors, and it is no more fun to drive than the standard powertrain. The silky 301-hp V-6 engine featured on the XLE and XSE versions, as well as the TRD variation, is the actual highlight of this lineup. We’re also pleased to report that we no longer despise driving the Camry.

It offers a smooth ride and surprisingly agile handling. When cornering, the steering is well weighted and feels robust, but light when manoeuvring in parking lots. We drove the Camry in both its top-tier XLE model and its more modest SE trim. Both are roomy and comfortable, with the XLE being simply sumptuous. However, there is a significant difference in material quality between the entry-level models and the more expensive versions, and the unimaginative design of the centre area of the dashboard left several of us chilly.

The Camry is a spacious sedan with ample cargo capacity and interior storage in both the trunk and the cabin when the back seat is folded. It’s not the best in every storage category, but it’s extremely competitive overall. Toyota shifted the Camry hybrid’s battery from the trunk to beneath the back seats, allowing hybrid customers to gain mpg without sacrificing carrying capacity.
