Exterior
There’s a Silverado 1500 for every job, thanks to a variety of engines that include a turbocharged four-cylinder, two V-8s, and a Duramax diesel 3.0-liter inline-six. The 420-hp 6.2-liter engine is the fastest of the two eight-cylinder engines, accelerating the Silverado High Country we tested to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. The smaller 355-hp 5.3-liter clocked in at 6.1 seconds.
The turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder now produces 420 pound-feet of torque, which could come in handy when hauling. Although the diesel-powered Silverado we tested had the slowest acceleration of the three, the engine’s smooth and quiet running satisfied us. Every Silverado we’ve driven has seemed smaller than its dimensions suggest.

The Trail Boss model is ideal for anyone searching for a more rugged half-ton Silverado. It comes with a 2.0-inch raise, gnarly tyres, and other improvements that make traversing the back roads easier and more enjoyable. We assess the new ZR2 individually because it is the most serious off-roader.
The half-ton Silverado is a serious hauler, with a maximum towing capability of 13,300 pounds. It tows 550 pounds more than the Ram 1500, but 700 pounds less than the F-150. Both the diesel engine and the 6.2-liter V-8 have the highest towing capacity, although the 5.3-liter version can still tow up to 11,500 pounds.
Interior
The Silverado may be built in a variety of ways, from the stripped-down Work Truck to the fully loaded High Country. Only the essentials are included in base versions, such as manually adjustable front seats, manual locks and windows, and vinyl seats. The cabin is substantially snazzier starting with the LT level, due to a handsome dashboard design with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a large central touchscreen.
With its leather upholstery and open-pore wood trim, the High Country’s interior is exceptionally attractive. While the crew cab boasts a large back seat with plenty of legroom, we found the back seat cushions to be unpleasant. Nonetheless, this is a useful carrier, with smart storage compartments strewn throughout the cabin.

A touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a mobile hotspot is standard on all Silverados 1500 models. Interacting with the system is simple thanks to the tactile knobs and buttons, and we liked how the screen responded quickly to our touch inputs. The LT trim and higher have a horizontal 13.4-inch touchscreen with enhanced capabilities such a Google-powered voice assistant, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration (if available).
